Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a planned, deliberate manner intended to inform or entertain the listeners. Public speaking can be a really horrifying experience and some people have even developed a fear about it. Having some nervousness when you are about to get up in front of an audience is rather normal. Even people who do this for a living are often nervous. So, you may think Why worry? If speaking in front of people is that scary, is there any reason to put myself through it? For improving your public speaking skills there are at least three good reasons. Yes its true, improving. The fact is that you are already a public speaker. If you have ever directed a stranger to a grocery store, entertained some of your friends with some good jokes or taught your colleagues how to use the office coffee maker, then you have practiced the most basic forms of public speaking. 1. You are already a public speaker - The first reason for becoming a better public speaker is you are already a public speaker. Since the only way to escape public speaking would be to go and live in a cave, you might as well learn to do a good job of it, so you can get the most benefit out of it. Generally, people who are very strong in their speaking and communication are more likely to make more promotions and increase their incomes. Even among people with the same job descriptions, those who speak more often gain better salaries. You're more likely to have control over how things are done at work, too, when you make your voice heard. 2. The Power of influence - The second reason to improve your skills as a public speaker is Power of influence. Most governments are influenced by the opinion of their citizens and most businesses respond to the views of their customers. So, if you want to influence the attitudes and practices in your school, city, company or state, then you need to think about how to get your message across. If you are a parent at a school board meeting, a sales man or a president of a company, you're in the business of public speaking, which influences how things get done. Do you want to contribute clarity or confusion? 3. Fulfilling your potential - The final and most convincing reason for becoming a public speaker is to fulfill your own potential - both for your own satisfaction and to improve your lifestyle. No matter what your reason is for speaking in public, you can learn to become a good speaker. With the right skills and practice, you can even learn to look forward to it.
