According to scientists - who haven't seen my home - eating at home, in what they call a controlled environment, is healthier and safer than eating out. Wrong. Life isn't safe. Eating yesterday's leftovers might not be safe either. I'm willing to take my chances and eat out as often as possible - as long as I don't have to eat fast food. Restaurants with neon signs, drive-through windows and menus on the wall give eating out a bad name. Truth in advertising should require fast food restaurants to drop the "S" and be known for what they really are - fat food restaurants. According to my mother-in-law, who actually cooks, we should eat something we don't get at home when we go out. If you live in my home, that leaves lots of choices. When we go out, we usually choose ethnic restaurants - Chinese, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mexican or Thai. They challenge the taste buds, but not the budget. Although these cuisines offer a variety of choice, I order the same things. If it's an Indian restaurant, I have vegetable curry. If it's a Thai restaurant, I have pad see ew. I suffer from EST - Eating the Same Thing. EST is no problem at home. There it's standard practice. Choosing to eat at Chinese restaurants was standard practice when the boys were little. For them it was Chucky Cheese with chopsticks. They used the Lazy Susan in the middle of the table to experiment with centrifugal force. Their interest in the big tanks of fish turned to fascination when they realized the fish were waiting to be food - not to be fed. After we'd been fed, they delighted in watching the waiter perform by putting all the dishes in one tall stack as he cleared the table. Last, but not least, they liked Chinese restaurants because they got dessert even if they didn't finish their dinners. They got the Hostess Cupcakes of cookies - the cookies with the surprise inside. I called them fortunate cookies. Because they're all the same size, there was no arguing about someone getting a bigger one. Uneaten Chinese food - or any food - doesn't come home. To me it's leftovers to go. Most people think to-go food is cheaper than eating in restaurants because you avoid tipping. Frankly, I get tips at home. Unfortunately, they're in the form of complaints. No, for me eating at home isn't healthier and safer.
