I realized a number of years ago that the only person who was holding me back in life was ME. Unfortunately, that recognition did not automatically give me the antidote to the beliefs I held that seemed to keep me in a prison of my own making. It wasn't only that I felt stuck in life, the bigger problem was that I had lost my dreams and even my sense of who I was as a person. The various roles I played that supported the lives of other people had somehow left my own life empty and unfulfilled. I began to think back to my childhood and remember the dreams and desires I held then, and as I allowed myself to dream a little, the hopes of the past were rekindled. I had always wanted to be an engineer, yet to please my parents did not pursue this desire. Once I reconnected to my core desires, I could reestablish this as a goal. Unfortunately, the goal on its own was not enough. The demands placed on my life by the needs of others made pursuing these goals seem difficult if not impossible. Nevertheless, I enrolled in a college course and began my journey towards my dreams. All I had to do was put one foot in front of the other and do the next thing that was due and I could complete the qualification. It wasn't as simple as this, of course. Initially, I doubted my ability to manage the course as well as all the other areas of my life and a lack of sleep left me feeling chronically exhausted. At this time, I discovered the power of the right affirmation. I had a framed poem on my wall called "Don't Quit." It seemed to be speaking to me. I would read it every day and feel myself agreeing with the words. I began to tell myself to just "grit my teeth and keep going." One day, I noticed that my jaw was aching and I realized that I had actually been gritting my teeth physically. This was my first awareness of the power of the subconscious mind and how affirmations can be used to reprogram our beliefs. My belief that I couldn't complete the course was transformed into a belief that I could and instill the "Never Quit" attitude. This reprogramming strengthened my commitment to achieve my own goals and supported a positive self belief. I completed the course and gained the professional qualification towards my goal. I then began work as a research enginner in a MNC. It was the dream I had imagined as a child. I hadn't believed it possible considering my life circumstances but a change in beliefs, taking consistent action towards my goals, having patience and determination allowed me to move from where I was to where I wanted to be. I learned the valuable lesson that I am far more powerful than I could have imagined and the beliefs I hold about myself are like magnets. They can attract the best that life can offer or the very things we fear. It is really up to you and me.
