Young people, as a rule, don't spend a lot of time thinking about boring things like insurance or personal safety until something happens in their lives to force them into doing so. As they get older they tend to follow the same route we all do e.g. find a partner, get somewhere to live, better job, have kids and generally settle down and try to enjoy life. Somewhere along the way they accumulate the trappings that make everyday living easier such as bank accounts and credit cards. By this time they've also acquired other necessities like home insurance, college fee accounts and general household utility accounts. Their happy little existence revolves around working hard, looking after the family, saving for a rainy day and maybe taking the occasional holiday. In other words they've become Mr. and Mrs.Joe Average. There are many normal events and circumstances that can disrupt our lives and depress us. We all have to deal with illness, accidents, bereavements, losing our job and a myriad of trivial things, but by and large we cope, dust ourselves off and get back to normal as soon as we can. Now, can you imagine something awful happening in Joe's happy little life that was so depressing it would make him want to end the misery by committing suicide? This horrible crime is happening to millions all over the world and it is destroying ordinary peoples lives - it's known as Identity Theft. Victims of these crimes come from all levels and strata of society but the vast majority are not wealthy individuals but ordinary working men and women and it can take months, sometimes years to recover control of their lives. Credit ratings, Social Security, bank loans, jobs and a host of other things can be affected by the misuse of confidential information. Let me explain, in simple terms, just exactly what the meaning of Identity Fraud or Theft is...It occurs when someone illegally obtains personal information or data to use (typically) for their own monetary gain at their victims' expense - although it's certainly not limited to just fiscal matters. A favorite book of mine is Freddie Forsyth's Day Of The Jackal in which the main character obtains another identity by fraudulent means. The author describes exactly how easy this was to do - all those years ago! Just how do the villains get their grubby little paws on your personal stuff? The short answer is - very easily in todays high tech automatic billing climate. The advent of the computer age has made stealing private data even easier. Thieves can even use very simple means to get what they want such as scouring your trash bin, breaking into your mailbox or simply stealing your purse or wallet. It's astounding how much damage a professional can do just by knowing some simple facts such as your home address, pet's name or your mother's maiden name. Social Security numbers, credit card numbers or even just your email address can provide these fraudsters with rich pickings. It's astonishing to realize how fast they can raid your accounts and get away with it! The good news is that there are measures you can take to safeguard your personal security so that you don't end up joining these unfortunate millions. Some of the obvious ones are remembering to shred bills before trashing them and never give private information over the phone to people asking you to "verify this billing data". You must also be very, very careful giving your email address to strangers. Remember this, nobody's going to look after your personal security better than you so you owe it to yourself to find out all you can about protecting the stuff that can do you enormous damage in the wrong hands.
