Great employers know that their employees will do a little shopping around if they are unhappy. Most will want to keep their employees happy because employee turnover can lead to great losses. By doing a bit of research on their own, employers know a good median salary to pay their staff. When it comes time to give a raise, they know where to start from and how much to offer. If you are looking for a job and know that you have great qualifications, then do not be afraid to turn down an offer if the price is to low. If you know that other employers in the area are paying more, then you can tell the person offering you the job that you need more. Salary comparison can work to everyone's advantage if they know how to utilize it properly. You may not receive the exact amount you are asking for, but at least you have a basis of comparison. You can always look at other options for employment if you are unhappy with the offer.
